Healthy Homes Tips at the Positive Ageing Forum in Stratford

Ngā mihi nui to Stratford District Council for the opportunity to speak at the Positive Ageing Forum in Stratford. It was a privilege to connect with the local community and have meaningful kōrero about how we can support especially as we head into the colder months.

At the heart of our presentation was a simple but powerful message: everyone deserves a warm, dry and healthy home. We know that as we get older, our bodies become more sensitive to the cold and that poor housing conditions can seriously effect our health and wellbeing. That’s why we were so grateful for the chance to share practical, low cost ways to make homes warmer and healthier on budget.

We covered topics like:

  • how to reduce heat loss through full length, double lined curtains, blocking draughts and understanding where homes lose the most warmth.
  • Identifying moisture and dampness, and how to prevent mould and condensation from becoming a health risk.
  • Simple ventilation tips to keep air flowing without loosing too much heat.
  • Efficient heating options, including how to use what you already have in smarter ways.

The feedback from attendees was heart warming. Many shared stories of things they had already tired while others were eager to go home and put these new tips into action. It was a reminder of the value of coming together and learning from one another.

We were also lucky to hear from Hillary at Sport Taranaki who delivered a fantastic session on strength and balance. Their interactive approach had everyone up and moving and they reminded us just how important it is to stay active as we age, not just for confidence and independence too.

There was a strong sense of community in the room. Events like this show how much good can happen when local organisations, councils and community members come together with a shared purpose.

A huge thank you again to Stratford District Council for hosting such a valuable event, and to all the wonderful attendees who welcomed us so warmly. We look forward to continuing these conversations and supporting the wellbeing of our kaumatua and wider whānau across the region.
