What to Expect During Your Home Assessment with WISE

Healthy Homes Assessment

At WISE, we believe everyone deserves a warm, dry, and healthy home. That’s why a home assessment with WISE is so important. We want to make the process clear and easy to understand, so here’s what happens during a typical visit with our assessors, Rebecca and Debbie.

Before Your Home Assessment with WISE

The first step is simple. We receive a referral from a health provider, social worker, internet, community group and many other referral sources.  Once we have your details, we give you a call to book a time that works for you.

Before heading out, our team gathers helpful items for the household. These include:

  • Children’s pyjamas

  • Blankets

  • Toothbrushes

  • Mould treatment buckets

  • Healthy Homes booklets

These small items can make a big difference, especially during colder months.

What Happens During Your Home Assessment with WISE

The visit takes about 60 minutes. During this time, Rebecca and Debbie carry out a full check of your home. They look for signs that may prevent the home from meeting Healthy Homes standards.

Here’s what they inspect:

  • Cladding and roofing

  • Gutters and downpipes

  • Window condition

  • Indoor temperature and ventilation

  • Evidence of mould or damp

  • Flooring and insulation

  • Heating sources and efficiency

  • Power usage and energy bills

Why Kids’ Rooms Matter in a Home Assessment with WISE

They pay special attention to children’s bedrooms. Cold, damp rooms increase the risk of asthma, eczema, and respiratory illness. A child’s room must be warm and dry for healthy sleep and development.

After Your Home Assessment with WISE

After the visit, our assessors review all notes and photos. They decide what items could improve your home. This might include:

  • Curtains

  • Heaters

  • Bedding

  • Insulation support

  • Advice on heating use or ventilation

If curtains are needed, we return to measure the windows. That’s where our Curtain Bank comes in.

The Curtain Bank Process

Our Curtain Bank gives free, lined curtains to families who need them. Once the windows are measured, we find or sew curtains to fit. These make a big difference in keeping warmth in and reducing power bills.

Educating and Empowering

Education is a key part of every visit. We don’t just point out problems. We talk with you about what a healthy home looks like and how to get there.

You’ll receive our Healthy Homes Booklet, full of easy tips for:

  • Moisture control

  • Humidity

  • Avoiding mould

  • Saving on energy

  • Staying warm on a budget
