Our Community Garden
Our māra kai (community garden) is a deeply important part of the WISE kaupapa. It is a place of learning, connection, and nourishment for our community.
Here, we grow fresh produce that supports local whānau while also creating opportunities for people to come together, share knowledge, and reconnect with the land. The garden reflects the values of manaakitanga (caring for people) and kaitiakitanga (caring for the environment).
Supporting the Waitara Foodbank
A large portion of the produce grown in our māra kai goes directly to the Waitara Foodbank. Fresh vegetables harvested from the garden help ensure local whānau have access to healthy, nourishing food.
This simple but powerful cycle of growing and giving is at the heart of the garden. What is planted with care in the soil goes on to support families in our community.
Run with Heart by Volunteers
Our garden is lovingly run by our dedicated volunteer Shimmie, who plays a huge role in caring for the space, planning the planting, and keeping the garden thriving throughout the seasons.
From seed to harvest, Shimmie’s commitment helps make the māra kai the special place it is today.
We are also supported by other volunteers who lend a hand in the garden when they can. At times, local teams and community groups join us for volunteer days, helping with planting, weeding, and harvesting.
A Place to Learn and Connect
The garden is more than a place to grow food. It is a space where people can:
- Learn practical gardening skills
- Connect with others in the community
- Spend time outdoors in a positive environment
- Contribute to something meaningful
Whether someone is an experienced gardener or trying it for the first time, everyone is welcome to get involved.
Get Involved
If you or your team would like to volunteer in the WISE māra kai, we would love to hear from you. Helping in the garden is a great way to support the community while enjoying time outdoors.
Together, we can continue growing food, strengthening connections, and supporting whānau across our region.
