The impact of volunteering at Wise reaches every corner of our organisation. From the Curtain Bank to our community garden, from donation drives to events across Taranaki, volunteers bring energy, kindness and heart into everything we do. Their mahi makes homes warmer, gardens grow healthier and community initiatives thrive. Because of this, we feel grateful every single day.
As we continue to welcome new faces into our whānau, we celebrate all volunteers who have walked alongside Wise over the years. Their time and commitment shape the services our community relies on. Moreover, their efforts remind us that genuine change happens when people come together with purpose.
Volunteering at Wise Strengthens Communities
Volunteers offer more than support. They offer connection, warmth and hope. At Wise, their mahi helps us reach families faster, respond to community needs and expand our impact. When someone chooses to volunteer, they uplift not only our services but the wider community as well.
Over the years, volunteers have helped sort donations, run community drives, plant and harvest kai at our garden, guide families at events and support our educational outreach. Because of this collective effort, Wise can continue growing and serving Taranaki in meaningful ways.
Welcoming Our New Curtain Bank Volunteers
This year, we proudly welcome Katrena, Jennifer and Ruby to the Curtain Bank team. They join a long and wonderful line of volunteers who have shaped this service from day one. Their enthusiasm, skills and generosity highlight the ongoing impact of volunteering in supporting healthier, warmer homes for whānau.
They help sort, prepare and sew curtains, giving families an effective and affordable way to reduce heat loss and create more comfortable living spaces. As a result, their mahi touches hundreds of homes every year. Furthermore, their arrival reminds us of the many volunteers who have contributed before them, each leaving a lasting legacy.

A letter from Katrena:
Morena!
My name is Katrena Maxwell, and I have been a volunteer for Waitara Wise Charity Trust over a period of time.
I mahi in the ‘WHIPIT’ team and help with the ‘Curtain Bank’ team. I am very honoured and pleased to be onboard with the team members.
I decided to ask and find out how I can become helpful and offer my services in making up curtains for people’s homes.
My experience with Waitara Wise Charity Trust has been the greatest thing I could have stepped into.
My family members and I got the opportunity to have our homes provided with the services for free; I couldnt had been more greatful for this help.
I decided to give back to Wise Charity Trust and do the same by giving my free time to help where’s needed.
I really enjoy working with everyone.
I am glad I meet a wonderful team but especially the staff.
Everyone is a like ball of fantastic fun, welcoming, happy, well communicated productive smiling team!
I willingly am going to continue my mahi and time with Wise Charity Trust as long as I can and enjoy building great relations within the community trust.

Growing Together in Our Community Garden
Beyond the Curtain Bank, volunteers also nurture the Wise community garden. Here, they plant seedlings, harvest seasonal produce and share gardening knowledge with families. The garden reflects the spirit of volunteering because it shows how shared effort can grow something beautiful.
Every hour spent weeding, watering or planting strengthens our connection to the whenua and to each other. In addition, the produce supports local families and community initiatives, making every volunteer contribution deeply valued.
Why Volunteering Matters at Wise
The impact of volunteering extends beyond tasks. It creates friendships, builds confidence and strengthens community resilience. Volunteers tell us they feel more connected, more purposeful and more empowered after joining Wise.
Likewise, families across Taranaki feel the difference. Volunteers help homes stay warm, gardens flourish and support networks expand. They create ripple effects that last long after the workday ends.
